Causes of Damage for wood shake roof's are many, including: THE SUN- The ultraviolet light attacks wood fiber in the cedar and generates heat. This bakes out the natural wood binding fibers, causing the shakes to become brittle. RAIN- While water may stand on new or treated cedar during a rain, it soaks into the untreated wood like a sponge. The wood is damaged by being alternately soaked and dried out. MOSS- Moss and fungus are high in acid content and retain moisture all year round that will accelerate the deterioration of cedar.
